Funny Farm

I am a neighborhood coordinator for a local service called The Produce Box.  I sign-up and deliver to customers, who live in or near my neighborhood, local produce delivered their doorstep every week.  The owners of the farm where we get our produce invited all the coordinators to come to their farm for a tour. When we arrived we got to walk around and see all the greenhouses where they grow lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers. It was neat to see the growth process of the fruit and vegetables. I didn't know that tomatoes bloom into a flower that then turns into tomato that we eat. So neat! They had a few cage animals, chickens, roosters and a peacock. Riley was most excited seeing the peacock, well, and the other children.

Storm clouds loomed so we all hopped onto the tractor for a hay ride around the rest of the farm. We got to see all kinds of produce like peppers, cantaloupe, watermelon, blueberries, squash, zucchini, carrots and lots more. It was fun trying to guess what each thing growing was before they told us. We even got a couple right! The farm is owned by the Lee's and is ran only by family members. Because they provide produce to us, they don't have to sell at the Farmer's Market like other local farmers.

When we got the strawberry fields we were given baskets to pick our own strawberries. Once Riley realized she could pick something off the ground and I allowed her to eat it, she was all game! She would grab a strawberry and shove the whole thing, including the stem, into her mouth. She had red juice all over the front of her shirt & face and I dressed her in white that day, what was I thinking?!? She was a mess!

On the way back to the farmhouse Riley had her first public meltdown. She was upset because she wanted more strawberries and we wouldn't let her, also she was hot, thirsty, and it was nap time. Time to go! We grabbed some homemade ice cream (can not pass that up!) and then hopped in the car to head home. Fun day!
